The Space to Believe

The Space to Believe

Each of us has our own set of beliefs about the world; why we exist, what makes up a good breakfast, what’s the correct way to greet a stranger or say hello to a dog you don’t know yet.

The great news is that there is plenty of room to form (and test) your own beliefs.  You can try a belief on for a day or a lifetime to see if it fits you.  The place we get into trouble is when we try to force our beliefs onto other people.  Sharing your beliefs is one thing, trying to make people believe what you do is another.

This week revisit some beliefs that you have formed – beliefs about yourself, about your family, your loved ones, your co-workers or team.

What do you think about them?
How are they working for you?

Shaking up your own beliefs is difficult. The basal ganglia likes the routine of patterns and when you disrupt that, YIKES, it shoots a little alarm into your system.

Yet beliefs can change over time, so making space to revisit the beliefs you hold about yourself will help you shift into the new you that is evolving in this moment.

You are an evolutionary being, so when things start to feel stagnant, rather than telling yourself the story that it’s time to “buckle down” and stick with whatever you think you’re supposed to do, try something new.

Try uncoupling yourself from the Should of your dilemma and take a walk with your What if? self. The What if? self utilizes your imagination to formulate new theories, or experiment with new parts of you and new beliefs. Listen to the subtle nuanced ideas the What If? self serves up.

Try on some new beliefs about yourself – like maybe you are perfect just the way you are.  Or how about the belief that everything will be okay, no matter which way it turns out.

Beliefs shape our world and what you believe is entirely up to you.

Experiment.
I love this picture I was sent of a group's current and future state. They agreed that all they need to do is travel that road, with kindnesslove and respect and they'll be fine.

Getting Some Detachment
Recently we moved our house (and my office) to another city - Portlandia! While I knew it would be a good move, I found the toughest parts were leaving my neighbors, that (ahem) recently remodeled house, and the casual, but significant, day-to-day interactions I had with people in my hood.

Since my work isn't locked to a place, and my PNW clients see Portland and Seattle as sister cities, (albeit one boasts more piercings ;-0), my moving 3 hours away wasn't an issue for them.

Many of my friends said things like, "We'll probably see you more, now that you'll need a place to stay when you are working here." (Correct!) Not an issue for them.

While I consider myself a pretty good change agent, I found myself not hiring someone to clean the house at the end. Instead I chose to do it myself, and while doing it, went room to room to room...I just couldn't seem to ... let....go. While mopping the last inch of that shiny basement floor one more time, I thought, "Girl, you need to get some detachment! Unhook the train car and...LET GO! Stop looking back! Start looking where you are going!"  Suddenly, things got much easier and I found myself in a swirl of newness.

WHAT'S great about moving?
Moving forces you to reevaluate.
STUFF.  You look at all the stuff you've acquired and ask yourself, "Now why do I still have that?!"
PRIORITIES. You start thinking, what things do I want to live close to? How long of a commute do I want to have? What new things can I try?

One of our dogs needs to run. So having a park nearby was very important. My new office is super close to parks.  But the surprise came when we were walking the dogs one night and discovered this trail 4 blocks from our new home on a street we'd never walked before. It leads to a sweet nature preserve, a bike trail, a creek. NICE.

Detachment paves the way for new things to come into your life.
If you look closely when change is occurring, you can see how seamlessly life steps in to make your transition smoother.

PRETEND you are moving. ASK for new things you want to experience, then LET GO of some of your old habits (and stuff!).

Step into each day as if you are entering a new house, a new partnership, a new city.  Then, watch with wonder as life rearranges the road and the scenery around you to match your new state of consciousness, as it did to hold and support our family in our Portlandish move.

For these amazing gifts I am grateful.  And for your readership.  I thank you.

NOW, please check out the cool people I have been meeting and what they are up to.  Some of them might have a surprise or an adventure for you!

Stay Inspired by Keeping Your Serotonin Up

So it's mid January and you are wondering...geez I felt so good about my goals on January 1.  Today?  Not sure.

Well if you created a visual of your dream, a goal map, a collage, a list, a blogpost, fear not there is a simple way to keep yourself inspired.

You simply need to review what you created, dreamed, listed, arranged, set out as an intention.

But first, let's re-adjust your chemistry.

Get up - do 10 jumping jacks.  Or 20 push-ups.  Drink an 8 oz glass of water.  Or sing a song at the top of your lungs.

Now, sit down, sit back, shut your eyes and do a little daydreaming.  Positive daydreaming - so put the critic in the corner and dream the best possible scenario.

Imagine yourself in that new job, on that vacation, feeling slim, eating well, living loved, being more creative.

Imagine it as if it is occurring right now.  Live it in your mind fully!  Imagine that new boss, the myriad of possibilities.  Surf on that seashore.  Climb that trail in the mountains that you love. Kiss that imagined or actual partner that you have.  Feel it in your body, your cells, dream, dream, dream.

Guess what?  You just raised your serotonin level and you inspired yourself.  So let go of whatever list you have going for a second and ask yourself, "What is one thing I can do right now, in this inspired moment to get things moving?"  Write it down and go do it.

Call that person with that lead on a new job. Write that bio. Draw that picture. Place a personal ad. Run around the block.  Try something new.

One small act everyday will lead to you living that secret dream you have be housing in your brain.  Get it out of there and into here.  Real life.  You deserve it.

Up your creative genius today. #meanit
