The Space to Believe

The Space to Believe

Each of us has our own set of beliefs about the world; why we exist, what makes up a good breakfast, what’s the correct way to greet a stranger or say hello to a dog you don’t know yet.

The great news is that there is plenty of room to form (and test) your own beliefs.  You can try a belief on for a day or a lifetime to see if it fits you.  The place we get into trouble is when we try to force our beliefs onto other people.  Sharing your beliefs is one thing, trying to make people believe what you do is another.

This week revisit some beliefs that you have formed – beliefs about yourself, about your family, your loved ones, your co-workers or team.

What do you think about them?
How are they working for you?

Shaking up your own beliefs is difficult. The basal ganglia likes the routine of patterns and when you disrupt that, YIKES, it shoots a little alarm into your system.

Yet beliefs can change over time, so making space to revisit the beliefs you hold about yourself will help you shift into the new you that is evolving in this moment.

You are an evolutionary being, so when things start to feel stagnant, rather than telling yourself the story that it’s time to “buckle down” and stick with whatever you think you’re supposed to do, try something new.

Try uncoupling yourself from the Should of your dilemma and take a walk with your What if? self. The What if? self utilizes your imagination to formulate new theories, or experiment with new parts of you and new beliefs. Listen to the subtle nuanced ideas the What If? self serves up.

Try on some new beliefs about yourself – like maybe you are perfect just the way you are.  Or how about the belief that everything will be okay, no matter which way it turns out.

Beliefs shape our world and what you believe is entirely up to you.

Experiment.
I love this picture I was sent of a group's current and future state. They agreed that all they need to do is travel that road, with kindnesslove and respect and they'll be fine.

What does your vision to reality map look like?

The Genius Equation

You + Passion + Service = Genius

I was illustrating for 3 speakers this week as part of the TAACCCT conference and they were so INTO their thing. Each shared their wisdom in stories that were interesting, that enticed the audience to stretch and grow, test and explore.

While all of them were passionate about what they were sharing with the room, one of them fully embodied the Genius Equation:
You + Passion + Service.
Wes Moore, didn't attempt to wow the crowd, or win us over with an intellectual compendium of business facts and superslickslidedecks.

Instead, he humbly spoke directly to us, and shared his personal story.  When a man who shared his name, Wes Moore, shot someone in his hometown during his getaway robbery and was convicted to serve a life-term in prison, the speaker Wes Moore, went to visit him.

Why? He wondered, how did someone with the same name, from the same city, with a similar upbringing, end up here? What was the difference or similarity between who that incarcerated man was and himself? Both had grown up in the same decaying city, were raised by single mothers, both had been in trouble and been arrested as juveniles.

Then he shared the differences he discovered - how the tough love from his mother and mentors, the disciplinary school and subsequent military service, instilled in him the ability to make different choices and to create a life of success. He was a beautiful, radiant example of the Genius Equation:
You + Passion + Service.
Wondering how to reveal and celebrate the Creative Genius you?

•Value and ignite your passion
•Fuel it by doing what you love
•Find your way to serve all life

Lead others to find their passion.  Share, show, teach, tell others how beautiful they are everyday in every way. You make a difference!

The Secret Sauce of Success

The Secret Sauce of Success

Wondering what your next move is? Where your next career path is lurking or how to step up some aspect of your life? Tune in to this study: Ohio State University researchers have been exploring a concept called "upward self-revision" of our "possible selves."

Sound intriguing? uh yah! The study explored key contributors to student success.  Researchers focused on how painting a positive picture of a future career path would influence the student's confidence and eventual success in achieving it. Translated into action it means when you help someone picture a future possible self, they are more likely to believe it could be reality and begin working to achieve it.

This is why coaching, mentoring, encouraging and positive connotation is so critical to helping others become more of their best selves.  Picturing that future you is part of it. Hearing others validate you is another ingredient. It builds your inner confidence.

One of the reasons I love speaking to coaching groups is that they are able to immediately embed the vision to reality drawing process into their work.  What better way to help someone step up their game then to draw them a picture of the future state they desire with them in it!  Watch them step through obstacles with that added boost of the picture and their belief that it is possible.  That it is evolving right now. Goal setting with a powerful positive intent.

Lead a staff?  Have children?  Have friends?  Those few encouraging words that you say to them can go a long way.

Do someone thing great for someone around you today.

Paint a picture of the their future self and seal it with something positive, it's the secret sauce to success.
